PALM SPRINGS - Gloria talk with director Patrick Farrelly, Kate O'Callaghan.
The eponymous Nuala is Nuala O'Faolain (1940-2008), author of the bestselling memoir Are You Somebody? and the novel My Dream Of You. This warts-and-all biography paints a vivid picture of the Irish author/TV producer/columnist/cultural commentator's remarkable life, bountiful talent and uncompromising death. Her dear friend, Irish radio host Marian Finucane, serves as narrator and provides an empathetic onscreen presence, while also prodding the interviewees to a frankness that the author would have appreciated.
Mixing interviews with friends, colleagues and relatives with choice archival footage and photos, the film considers O'Faolain within the context of her time and family history. She was one of nine children in an extremely dysfunctional family; her glamorous, philandering father covered high society for the Irish Times, while her alcoholic mother neglected the house and kids. We see how her ferocious intellect and independent mind allowed her to rise above her circumstances and develop into a revered public figure, popular writer and a woman who experienced life in a more profound way than most.
