President Bill Clinton Welcomes Crowd, Players to 2013 Humana Challenge
LA QUINTA - Former President William J. Clinton cozied up with the crowd and field of players Thursday morning at the Humana Challenge at PGA West in La Quinta. Despite, chilly weather, the annual PGA golf tournament got underway without any trouble.
Clinton is not expected to play any golf during the tournament this year due to his schedule and commitments back in Washington with planning President Obama's inauguration celebration.
Tournament play for the Coachella Valley's annual four-round, 72-hole PGA TOUR golf event takes place Jan. 17-20 at the Arnold Palmer Private Course and Jack Nicklaus Private Course at PGA WEST and La Quinta Country Club. Nine-time major champion and Humana well-being ambassador Gary Player, Billy Casper, champion of the 1970 Masters, 1959 and 1966 U.S. Open and 1965 and 1969 Bob Hope Desert Classic, and Humana Chairman of the Board Mike McCallister hit ceremonial tee shots at the first hole at the Arnold Palmer Private Course at PGA WEST to begin the 2013 Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation. Casper and Player are members of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Joining the group at the first tee were PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem and Humana Challenge Executive Director and CEO Bob Marra. The special ceremony also featured a rendition of the national anthem.
