Getting Your Digital Foot in the Door
PALM DESERT- Getting a job in tough economy can be hard enough, but could your presence, or lack of presence online be holding you back?
"Just like your resume has to be completely error free, so does your online presence," said Joe Cockrell, Brandman Director of Public Relations.
Cockrell teaches job seekers how to get a leg up, online.
"For the younger generations it's about cleaning up your digital identity, for people new to it, it's about establishing one," said Cockrell.
To get your digital foot in the door, Cockrell offers three steps:
1. Make sure you have a professional email address. Use a seperate email address specifically for your job search.
2. Present a professional image of yourself online.
-- Clean up your online photos and comments, and start using sites to showcase your skills and network. For example, Llinkedin allows you to connect with potential employers.
3. Demonstrate your skills through social media activities
-- You can post industry sepcific articles to Twitter or join professional groups on Linkedin.
"It's so competitve now, employers have plenty of applicants and what they are really doing is looking for reasons to exclude you as a candidate," says Cockrell.
But as you "friend" and "follow" connection online, don't forget about the all important in person hand shake.
