UPDATE: Man Shot By Indio Police Officer Has Died
INDIO - A Riverside County Sheriff's spokesman say the man shot late Thursday by an Indio police officer has died in a local hospital. Corporal Angel Ramos said the man was 23 years old and was announced dead at a local hospital at 12:34 A.M.
Police are not release the identity of the man at this time. Investigators say he was shot by an Indio police officer following a brief altercation between the suspect and the officer. The suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital where police say he then died.
The shooting happened around 11:30 P.M. Thursday in the area off the 82400 Block of Miles Avenue in Indio. Police have secured the area and blocked of Miles to traffic between Park Street and Arabia.
Investigators say a police officer approached the man who was riding a bicycle between some building along Miles Avenue. As the officer approached, the man fled. Moments later, police say, the man reappeared and the officer tried to make contact again. This time, police say, an altercation broke out between the man and the officer, resulting in the officer shooting the man.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.
