New Retail and Office Space Development Underway In Indio
INDIO - A lot of attention the past few months has focused on retail revitalization in Palm Springs with Measure J and the redevelopment of the Desert Fashion Plaza along Palm Canyon Drive. Many tax payers are now wondering what's being done, if anything, to boost retail development on the east end of the Coachella Valley.
KMIR6 met with officials from Indio where plans are already underway to build new office and retail space. Riverside County is also planning to increase its court and legal assistance presence in the valley. The county's plan includes opening a new detention center in downtown Indio.
According to Indio Mayor Pro Tem Michael Wilson, the city is working on developing new retail space to coincide with the COD and Riverside County's development projects. The COD expansion alone is a 40,000 square foot, $20 million development already taking shape along Indio's Oasis Street. Completion is expected in 2014, Wilson said.
The city says it is also working with a private investment company that is currently in escrow to purchase the old Fiesta Mall along Highway 111. The city owns the empty land directly behind the mall. Wilson says the city intends to work with the new owners of the mall to develop the surrounding land to create a new shopping and dining experience. Plans are preliminary, but Wilson said the city is discussing a possible outdoor mall and a movie theater.
