UPDATE: Hiding Child Injured By Moving Utility Trailer
PALM SPRINGS - Investigators in Palm Springs are releasing new details about a child who was seriously injured Sunday when the wheels of a utility trailer rolled over the boy.
The accident happened at approximately 3:38 PM, according to Palm Springs Police Department Spokesman, Sgt. Mike Kovaleff. Police received a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision occurring on a softball field at Sunrise Park, at the southwest corner of Baristo Road and Pavillion Way.
Upon arriving officers learned that a pickup truck towing an empty utility trailer had been parked on a softball field to setup for a special event at the location. An eleven year old male was playing hide and go seek in the area and had hid under the trailer for several minutes. According to a statement released Monday by Sgt. Kovaleff, the driver of the pickup truck, unaware that the eleven year old male was under the trailer, entered the pickup truck and began to drive away from the softball field area.
The eleven year old male was driven over by a set of the trailer tires as the pickup truck towing the trailer began to drive away. The driver of the pickup truck immediately stopped at the scene.
The eleven year old boy, who resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The cause of the collision remains under investigation and the driver of the pickup truck was not cited or arrested following the preliminary investigation.
Police say alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor at this time.
