MECCA- Everyday volunteers across the valley are helping children learn to read, with a program called "Read with Me" and it has become a force shaping east valley schools.

The reading program started nine years ago with just 50 volunteers, now it has grown to more than 400 volunteers.

Volunteers from three Coachella Valley churches hop on a bus every school day, and head for East valley schools.

Roberta Klein started the program at Mecca Elementary. Most of the students in mecca come from migrant farm worker families.

"It's a source of just great joy-- I can't tell you, it makes me cry to see the children growing and thriving and the volunteers enjoying what they're doing," said Klein.

School officials say over they years students have had stronger test scores.

"It also helps their confidence and knowing that even though there are people who live far away, that they care about them," said Klein.
